I bought this fantastic book, "Hello Cupcake," and I am obsessed. The book is beautifully laid out and the ideas are whimsical, eye-catching, and easily achieved by using common cooking supplies. The authors recommend using boxed cake mix and offer alternatives to spruce up the recipe. They also offer extremely helpful suggestions on how to make their tasty creations through simple objects such as a ziploc bag (no need for running out and buying fancy icing bags). I never dreamed a starburst candy could be so versatile, but heated up in the microwave for 5 sec and you have instant marzipan!
Anyway, I bought this book because, as a new mom, I figured I would be called upon to create cupcakes at some point in my child's life. Being an artistic mom, I'm guessing the bar is set quite high. Why not get a jump start? She's only 1, but time flies. My honor students saw the book and coyly suggested I make the penguins for them...."you know, you could practice on us". So on the last day of school, I did. I made 24 penguins and two dogs. One for my dear, fellow art teacher and one for a very special student who honored me with a rose and a note reading, "even though I only had you for one quarter, you were my favorite teacher." MELTED ME! So little, lovely Emily got her very own scottie dog.
